Zusman Eye Care Center
By Neil B. Zusman, M.D. Zusman Eye Care Center
Dr. Neil B. Zusman, a specialist in no-stitch, no-needle, no-patch cataract surgery under topical anesthesia, has served the residents of Charlotte County since 1988.
Dr. Zusman also performs laser surgery and eyelid surgery, provides treatment for glaucoma, diabetes, and macular degeneration, and offers routine eye examinations. His on-site optical shop offers a variety of glasses and contact lenses. Dr. Zusman was inspired by his late father, Paul Zusman, an optometrist in Michigan for more than forty years, to enter the field of ophthalmology.
After completing pre-med studies at Kalamazoo College, Dr. Zusman received his medical degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, served his internship at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, Michigan, and completed his residency at Emory University in Atlanta.
Dr. Zusman practiced at Inter-Medic Health Center in Port Charlotte for eleven years before opening his own practice in 1999. He quickly outgrew the office he opened on Harbor Boulevard and moved to the Harbor Professional Centre at the corner of Harbor Boulevard and Tamiami Trail. Instead of hiring an architect, Dr. Zusman called on his staff to design the 5,000 square foot Zusman Eye Care Center. The result is a circular design, with an optical shop occupying the center, surrounded by individual exam rooms. It is a patient-friendly office where all aspects of the business can be accessed comfortably.
The new facility opened three weeks before Hurricane Charley hit in August 2004. The clinic received substantial roof damage and Dr. Zusman operated from a tent in the parking lot for a week. While affiliated with Bayfront Port Charlotte and Fawcett Memorial Hospitals, Dr. Zusman performs most of his surgery at Charlotte Surgery Center on King's Highway.
Dr. Zusman considers it both a joy and a privilege to provide eye care to the citizens of Charlotte County. He personally sees each patient on an individual basis and spends as much time as necessary to insure the patient understands the results of the examination. With the assistance of his professional staff — some of whom have been with him ten to twenty years — Dr. Zusman's goal is to see that proper professional diagnosis and treatment of patient's eye problems are accomplished in a way that instills complete confidence and satisfaction in the care received.
